I want to copy DVDs from the disk onto the computer. I need AVI format to play them, what is the best way to convert them and still get high quality viewing?

you’ll need a bit of encoding skills.
The way I do it is with freeware called ‘virtualdubmod’ and ‘avisynth’.
it’s quite simple once you get the hang of it.
I don’t trust programs that just convert the video with 1-click of a button. Those really don’t give you the quality or size desired.
Just look around for virtualdubmod and avisynth. There are a lot of tutorials out there for you.

I use HandBrake - it’s free, simple and lets you encode into a ton of different formats including AVI, DivX, and other Hi-Def formats. You control the quality (higher quality = bigger files, smaller files = lower quality).
I store all my media - music and movies alike - on external hard drives. HandBrake makes it so I can leave my DVD’s in the cases, but still watch my movies on my computer. I’ve even had my computer hooked to a HDTV and the movies looked awesome!

Oh, PS: if you download and install the free version of the K-Lite Codec Pack, you can play just about every type of media native through any media player on your computer. Then they don’t HAVE to be in AVI format. Cheers!

diont listen to jason, its not illegal if its for your own private use as the disc are yours, you bought them. its only illegal to copy if you sell, hire etc. if your making money from it.
