This gorgeous movie, animated in a rare 2-D style, takes place in New Orleans at the time of the Great Depression and highlights Disney’s first African American heroine. In the movie, our lead character Tiana encounters a frog but unbeknownst to her, he is really a prince. He convinces her to kiss him, hoping the kiss will restore him to his previous princely form. In exchange he promises to help her with her plans to open a restaurant.
The plan backfires and Tiana becomes a frog herself! The prince and Tiana set off on a crazy adventure into the shadowy Louisiana Bayou to find a medicine man, the only person who can undo the curse and turn them back into their original forms. But they must hurry! If they don’t undothe spell in time, the prince and Tiana will remain frogs forever.
They stumble upon crazy characters along the way, including a Cajun butterfly, an alligator who plays the trumpet and a blind old lady who lives in a boat in a tree. Collectively they make their way to the Voodoo Queen who lives deep in the Bayou. She is the only one who can undo the wicked hex and turn Tiana and her prince friend back into humans.
Meanwhile, Dr. Facilier, the one who placed the curse in the first place, finds out about the two and he charges off in search of the pair. To get extra assistance, Dr. Facilier enlists the help of the Voodoo spirits and tells them that if they catch Tiana and the prince, he will give them all the souls in New Orleans.
This film is fantastically animated in an old, rich style and is paired with toe-tapping music that you’ll be singing to yourself the rest of the day. The rich characters will appeal to kids of any age. With this movie as Disney’s first movie of “color,” there is no gratuitous stereotypes to offend anyone of any color; it is believable and tastefully done.
While this might not become a Disney top-shelf classic, it is definitely a good movie to have in your personal library. You are sure to enjoy the songs and while the animation takes a minute or two to get used to, you’ll find yourself loving the style, too. This movie is no technical slouch, either.Because of the complexity of the animation and the memorablesongwriting, the movie receivedthree Oscar Nominations, two for Best Original Song and the other for Best Animated Feature.
There’s no other Disney film quite like it but if you’re a parent of movie buffs, you’re sure to approve of this one!
