Whether for a local community broadcast or a nationwide stage show, casting the actors is one of the most important steps of any production. Finding the right actor for a role can make the part he or she is playing come alive, and, thus, communicate to the audience exactly what the writer and director wish to convey. Mind Mapping is one tool that can be incredibly useful when casting actors because of its unique ability to aid in the thinking process when making a choice. This ability lies largely in the fact that Mind Maps allow users to organize information using a highly visual and spatially constructed format. With Mind Maps, one can literally “map out” his or her thinking process when considering an actor or actress for a part, in one diagram, using colors, pictures, or other images as desired. Organizing information in this manner has been shown to allow the brain to process and recall the information more naturally, as well as allow one to work with the information more efficiently. Therefore, Mind Mapping offers those casting for a part, regardless of the production size or venue, a creative and intuitive way to help them do so.

Using Mind Mapping to Cast a Role

Ed is casting actors for the lead role in his local film. After auditioning several actors, he decides that he is ready to make his decision as to who among them will get the part. In order to help him think through his choices, he decides to try Mind Mapping, and commences constructing a Mind Map representing his search for the lead actor. After placing the map’s purpose, casting the lead, in the map’s center, Ed next adds branches to his map, on which he lists the names of the actors he is considering. On child branches attached to each branch, he next lists any thoughts he has surrounding the actor’s ability to carry out the role. Throughout his Mind Map, Ed uses colors, pictures, and other images to make his map more creative and his thought process more conceptual. When he has completed his map, it looks similar to the attached Mind Map diagram.

A Successful Film Production Thanks to Mind Mapping

After reviewing the footage shot during the first day of filming, Ed is delighted with his lead actor’s performance so far. The actor, Ed feels, has been truly able to get the nuances of the role and convey the exact emotions and energy the part requires. Ed remembers how nervous he was about casting the right person for the lead. However, after evaluating those who had auditioned using Mind Mapping, he was able to arrive at a choice for the role rather easily. The Mind Map that Ed used to help him to organize his thoughts around what he was looking for in an actor and intuitively represent his thoughts using the map’s spatial layout. As a result, he was now able to fully conceptualize each actor’s audition performance in the way that he needed to, and find the perfect person to portray his vision for the role on film.
